1) Try browsing the eBay Stores. eBay Stores are a way for sellers to offer buyers both auction and fixed-price merchandise through an online storefront. You can get to the Stores either from the main eBay home page, or from the category display pages, where you will see a link.
2) The more unethical person might have considered that you could just cancel bids anytime you feel like it by saying that you accidentally entered the wrong amount. eBay are one step ahead of you. Each time you retract a bid, it is counted on your feedback page for all to see - and anyone with a lot of retracted bids looks more than a little dodgy. eBay also say that abusing the bid retraction feature could get you banned.
3) Far too many sellers just put 'rare' into all of their descriptions - the chances are that the item is common and has just been described wrongly.
4) If you aren't satisfied with your purchase, then you can claim under eBay's purchase protection program for up to 0.
5) You can always tell if a listing has a Reserve Price by the indication next to the "Currently" amount, which will state either "reserve not yet met" or "reserve met".
The company's current business strategy includes increasing revenue by increasing international trade within the eBay system. Over the years, eBay has introduced all sorts of different auction types, in an effort to give people more options when they buy and sell their things on eBay.
A Tidbit of eBay History:
In 1999 eBay acquired the auction house Butterfield & Butterfield, which it sold in 2002 to Bonhams.
